El Museo Ixchel del Traje Indígena created the ProTeje*, Committee in 1994. Using raw materials provided by the committee, weavers from different Guatemalan communities skillfully express themselves through their artistic textiles. *The name ProTeje is a combination of two words in Spanish: "en pro de las tejedoras," essentially “supportive of weavers.” It is also a play on words, as “proteje” is a homophone of “protege,” which means “protect.”newer generations.
